Have you not travelled in time? I have – just not very far. Every time you move at speed time slows down for you ever so slightly; this was shown clearly by flying an atomic clock around the world on a Boeing 747 and then comparing the time it said with an identical clock left on the ground. Only a few nanoseconds difference but it was time travel.
In theory maths says that we could create something like a time machine if we made two black holes at the same time. The only problem is that you would only be able to travel back to the point where you made the black holes. Well that and it would be incredibly hard to do, and you’d get crushed by the gravity of the black hole!
There’s a book that goes into the crazy maths behind it, it’s not really that much of a time machine, you could maybe send some light back. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Build-Time-Machine-Paul-Davies/dp/0141005343 I tried reading it once I think – it was fairly complex in places!
I guess depending on how you look at it we’re always travelling into the past. The faster you move the (slightly) slow time passes for you due to some very complex physics.
