• Question: do girls voices break?

      No. Boy’s voices break when they go through puberty and there is an increase in androgen (the male sex hormone) which causes their adams apple (or larynx) to grow. As it grows, so too does the vocal chords. They get longer and thicker which makes the boy’s voice deeper.

      Although it’s not as noticeable in girls as it is in boys…girls voices do break a wee bit! As Mel says, when you go through puberty your larynx grows and this makes your voice sound deeper. It happens in girls too, but it just isn’t as big a change as it is in boys. If you think about it…..does your mum have a deeper voice than your wee sister/cousin etc? Hopefully! 😉

      I remember being embarrassed at school because my voice was the deepest in the class! That soon changed when all the boy’s voices started breaking though – thank goodness! haha!
