The best day of my career so far was the day I was awarded my PhD. I studied for three years, wrote a big book about my work (80,000 words!) and on my examination day I had to present all my work to a big group of people and then have a 3 hour spoken exam with 3 professors! It is called a ‘defence’ because they ask you lots if questions and you’ve got to defend your work and say why it is important. It was such a cool day and them saying “congratulations Dr Paxton” was the best feeling!!

I’ve had lots of other interesting days like travelling to conferences to present work or making an interesting discovery in the lab, but I still think my exam day was the best and most interesting I’ve had……yet!

I must say that when I got offered a job to work at Oxford University was a very good day for me! I was very excited and proud of my achievement. I also enjoyed going to a conference in Florida and I am going to Japan at the end of April. I like going to conferences and exploring new parts of the world

This was the day that the idea I had about ultra-violet radiation was controlling chickenpox spreading in the tropics and was driving its evolution AND the fact that no one on the entire planet had had this idea before. I couldn’t believe it had happened in my brain!!
